Community Engagements

While I’ve been incredibly lucky and privileged to have made it this long and far in my career, it was still a fairly great struggle. There were so many barriers and gatekeepers. There were so few Black role models in this industry, virtually no one that looked like me wherever I was in the PNW. I work to give back. To give opportunities and show people that this is an industry they can be a part of and to help equip them with the knowledge and means.

Reporting on the “state of the industry” in Eugene,OR at the 2015 Oregon Film’s annual Governer’s Awards

President, Bitforest (Non-profit and Game Dev Community) (2014-Present)  I help run Bitforest with a talented rag-tag group of individuals that are professional game developers. I organize our hosted events both in-person and remote, and play a key role in overall operations of the org. I worked to make Bitforest an official 501c3 non-profit starting in 2019, and we were finally granted status in early 2021.

As Bitforest, we host a myriad of events enriching Eugene’s Game Development and Tech Entrepreneurship communities such as:
Quarterly Game Jams
Monthly Community Meetups
Weekly Morning Coffee Meetups
Weekly streaming movie nights during Covid
Game Dev Internships for High School Students in underserved communities
Game Dev tutorial workshops
And our annual local game conference, Indie Game Con

Board Member, Lane Arts Council (Arts and Culture non-profit) (2019-Present) Lane Arts Council cultivates strong and creative arts communities by providing high-quality arts experiences, engaging people of all ages in arts education, and encouraging artistic endeavors. As a board member, I help bring game dev focused ideas to the council, and advocate for STEAM focus in some of their programming when possible.

Mentor/Volunteer, codeORcreate (Connected Lane County) (December 2020, December 2021) I helped teams of high school students plan, organize, execute, troubleshoot, and showcase games they created in weekend hackathons.

Speaker, Intro Game Programming class (University of Oregon) (April 2016, April 2017, April 2019, April 2021)
I give an intro to audio presentation for the Intro Game Programming students at UO. I give them as much introductory intro and advice as they can to prep them for doing audio in their projects for the term.

Speaker, Career Day (West Albany High School) (March 2017, March 2019, March 2020, February 2022) I give a game dev presentation to WAHS students for their annual Career Day. I talk about what I do specifically, and talk about every other discipline possible. It’s an interesting and busy day, as there are typically 4 classes to present to in fairly rapid succession.

Committee Member, Media Arts Advisory Committee (Lane Community College) (March 2019-Present) Helped to keep LCC up to date on their game development courses and media arts programs.

Speaker, Artist Talk in Media Arts (Lane Community College) (January 2019) I had an opportunity to give an artist talk to the Media Arts audio students enrolled at LCC. Gave insight on my process and workflow at Pipeworks as well as showing them the audio projects from released game projects worked on at Pipeworks.
